In this part of Nathan’s, My Freshman Year, she talks to international students about their experience at an American university. Many complained about the lack of “real friendships, the education system being at low levels, and that Americans were ignorant of other cultures. While some of these things maybe true, I think they come from a biased opinion. Everyone views their home as the normal, and things that stray from the normal are bad. Taking an international student who admits to being lonely and not used to being away from their family will view any difference from their home as bad. I do the same thing. Although I only live two hours away there are a lot of differences that I do not like. I can find many faults with living here, but I know I have a biased opinion. I do not believe the information Nathan gathered from the international students is a reliable interpretation of the AnyU college.
The Mind at Work
In this chapter of, The Mind at Work, we follow a few boys and plumber named Mr. Guthier. Mr. Guthier is teaching the boys, who have a bad history, about plumbing. During work jobs the author observes that the boys are able to pick up on it quickly, even the boys you wouldn’t except, like Dwayne. To me this chapter suggests that people have different talents. Like these boys were having trouble academically in school, but were doing very well with plumbing. Some people are good at different things.
